Today’s devotion “Let your YES be YES” is part of “In the Waiting Let us Pray” as we explore “Faith in Action through The Epistle of James. Our scripture focus for today is James 5:12.
James is not talking about profanity here. He is addressing the kind of swearing where people make oaths, invoking heaven or earth, to make their words sound more trustworthy, But James says: do not do it. Just be truthful. Let your “yes” mean yes. Let your “no” mean no.
Why? Because anything more than that often masks a divided heart. When we try to dress up our speech, it is usually because something inside us is uncertain. Maybe we are trying to persuade others of a commitment we do not intend to keep. Maybe we want to sound more impressive than we really are. Either way it reveals a gap between our words and our character.
Jesus said the same thing in the Sermon on the Mount: “Make no oath at all… But let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’; anything beyond these is of evil origin” Matthew 5:34-37. In a world where words are often cheap and trust is fragile, integrity stands out.
Living with integrity means we do not manipulate with language. We do not stretch the truth to look better. We do not hedge our commitments. We simply speak what is real and stand by it. Not loudly, not defensively, but faithfully, like Jesus did.
So, ask yourself this question today: What do my words reveal about my heart, am I shaping truth to suit my image, or speaking with the quiet strength of integrity?
Integrity is not loud, it is consistent. It is not built in public but proven in private. Ask the Spirit to hep you align your speech with His truth today, especially in moments when it is tempting to exaggerate, embellish, or evade. Tomorrow we will explore God’s invitation to prayer in every season as we look at James 5:13-18.
Let us Pray:
Lord, You are the God of truth, and there is no falsehood in You. You spoke the world into being with clarity and purpose. Forgive me for the ways I have used words to manipulate, impress, or hide. Too often, I shape truth to serve my own image instead of surrendering to the image of Christ being formed in me. Teach me to speak simply, to mean what I say, and to live a life rooted in Your truth that oaths are unnecessary. Make me trustworthy, not because of polished speech, but because of a purified heart. Let my words reflect Your character and invite others to trust not in me but in You. I pray this in the faithful name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
