Welcome to our next devotion “Forged by Fire: Pray Without a Plan B” in our devotional series “Faith in Action” as we explore the epistle of James. Our scripture focus today is James 1:5-8. You can follow along in your bible or if you click any verses that are underlined in bold text a pop-up window will appear with the verse for you to read in ESV (English Standard Version)

When trials hit, most of us pray for a way out. But James calls us to something deeper: pray for wisdom within. The kind of wisdom is not about finding shortcuts or solving problems quickly. It is about learning to see as God sees, what to do next, how to endure well, and how to trust when nothing makes sense yet. As Proverbs 2:6 says, “For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” Wisdom isn’t summoned by strategy. It’s received through surrender.

And surrender be-gins with this: recognizing that God’s wisdom may not look like ours. Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us “My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways.” When we pray for wisdom, we’re not just asking for insight, we’re laying down our assumptions and asking to be aligned with the heart and mind of the One who sees the end from the beginning.

James also warns us: don’t come with divided motives. A double minded heart, one that asks but doesn’t really want to follow, won’t find footing. God gives freely, but He doesn’t compete with our backup plans. He calls us to ask in faith, and to trust His guidance even when it leads somewhere unexpected.

God is not holding out. He is holding wisdom in His hand, waiting for you to let go of your own. So, here’s the question worth asking today: Am I asking God for wisdom while still trying to keep control, or am I truly ready to receive whatever He says, no matter where it leads?

True wisdom doesn’t just answer your questions; it redirects your desires. Ask boldly. Trust fully. Tomorrow we will explore the dignity of contentment and the promise of eternal reward in our next devotion Forged by Fire: The Anatomy of Temptation in our Devotional Series Faith in Action.

Let us Pray:

Father, I confess that I often ask for guidance while clinging to my own plans. Teach me to trust Your ways, even when they are higher than mine. Give me wisdom that is pure, peaceable, and full of Your presence. And make my heart undivided, when seeking Your wisdom. We ask this in the wise and powerful name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
