The Mighty Mirth of God
Key Scripture: "He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision" (Psalm 2:4).
Introduction: The Sound We Don't Expect
When we think of God, we often picture solemnity, justice, and perhaps even sorrow for the state of the world. We less often imagine a God who laughs. Yet the Bible uses this powerful human emotion to help us grasp something profound about the divine nature. God is not anxious or worried; He possesses a settled, vibrant happiness and the complete assurance of one who controls the future. God's laughter is a rich, deep, and sovereign sound that communicates different things depending on who is listening.
Word Study: Laughs = the Hebrew word for "laughs" is יִשְׂחָק (yis·chak), a form of the root שׂחק (s-h-q), meaning to laugh, play, or mock, often used in a royal or divine context to show superiority or derision, appearing with "the Lord scoffs at them" (אֲדֹנָי יִלְעַג-לָמוֹ) as God observes earthly rulers' futile rebellion. This illustrates the vast chasm between human plans and divine purpose, emphasizing that no earthly authority can thwart God’s will.
I. The Laughter of Derision: God's Response to Rebellion
The primary instances of God's laughter in Scripture are found in the Psalms (Psalm 2:4; Psalm 37:13; Psalm 59:8) and they are described as laughter of derision or scoffing. What makes the Almighty chuckle from His throne in heaven? Human rebellion.
In Psalm 2, the kings and rulers of the earth conspire against the Lord and His Anointed King (Jesus Christ), seeking to break free from His authority. They make grand plans, believing they can establish a world without God. But their efforts are utterly pointless because God is sovereign over all. God laughs at their striking folly because He knows their day of judgment is coming and their plans will ultimately fail. This is not the laughter of a sadist, but the just response of a King who knows no purpose of His can be thwarted.
II. The Laughter of Comfort: Assurance for the Righteous
For God's people, this same laughter is the most comforting sound in the world. When we hear the world rage and see evil schemes succeeding temporarily, we can be tempted to fear. But God's laughter dispels our fears. It is a reminder that the "contest will not be close".
Like the excellent wife in Proverbs 31:25, we can "laugh at the time to come" because our security is in the
Lord, not in the stability of earthly circumstances. God's laughter is His nonverbal way of communicating that He is in control and we, who take refuge in Him, are safe in His unending shelter of happiness.
III. The Laughter of Grace: A Call to Repentance
The laughter of God serves as a severe mercy warning to those on the path of destruction. Even as God laughs at the vanity of His foes, He holds out open arms, offering an escape. The message of His laughter is: "Be warned... Kiss the Son" (Psalm 2:10, 12).
We can move from the laughter of unbelief (like Sarah in Genesis 18) to the laughter of faith, knowing that "nothing is impossible for the Lord". When God laughs at our human plans, our pride, or our self-importance, we should laugh with Him at ourselves and turn our will over to His perfect plan.
Conclusion: Echoing Divine Mirth
We are made in the image of a God who laughs, and we are invited to share in His joy. Genuine Christians ought to laugh a lot. Our laughter becomes an act of worship, a testament to our confidence in God's ultimate victory over sin, death, and evil. One day, all mourning will be a memory, and our laughter will be unhindered and unending, experienced in fullness in the age to come (Luke 6:21). Until then, let us tune our ears to the sound of our fiercely happy Father, trusting in His sovereignty and finding courage in His mirth.
