Our True Home
Scripture Focus:
"But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ." — Philippians 3:20 (NIV)
Reflection:
It is easy to get caught up in the "here and now." We worry about bank accounts, political climates, our health, and daily stressors. We are tempted to put down deep roots on earth, treating this life as our final destination. However, the Apostle Paul reminds us of a liberating truth: we are citizens of heaven. To the original readers in Philippi, this imagery was powerful. Philippi was a Roman colony—a "little Rome" located hundreds of miles from the actual capital. Its citizens lived under Roman law, enjoyed Roman privileges, and took pride in their status, even while living in a foreign land.
In the same way, as believers in Jesus, we are travelers in a foreign land. This world is not our ultimate home. While we are called to live, work, and love others while on earth, our primary allegiance and our true, permanent citizenship exist in the Kingdom of God.
Knowing that heaven is our home changes how we view our current trials. It means we don't have to be consumed by the, often, chaotic, or heartbreaking, events of this world. We can live as ambassadors of Christ, representing His kingdom values—grace, truth, and love—in a world that desperately needs them.
And for what are we waiting? A Savior. We are not just waiting for a place; we are waiting for a Person—the Lord Jesus Christ—who will return to make all things new, including transforming our current, fragile bodies into glorious, eternal ones.
Today, take a breath, lift your eyes, and remember where you belong. You are a citizen of heaven, just passing through.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for the privilege of being a citizen of heaven. Thank You that my future is not determined by the troubles of this world, but by Your promises. Forgive me for when I live as though this world is my home. Help me to live as an ambassador of Your kingdom, showing Your love and light to those around me. I eagerly wait for Your return. I pray these things in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
