The Essence of Who He Is
Scripture: "Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love." 1 John 4:8 (ESV)
Often, we define love by how we feel—it is fickle and contingent on circumstances. But the Bible tells us that God is love. It is not just what He does; it is who He is. When you struggle to feel loved or worthy, remember that God cannot be anything other than loving because it is His nature.
This love is not passive; it is a rescuing love. While we were still sinners, He sent His Son as the ultimate expression of that love (1 John 4:10). His love is a "covenant loyalty" (chesed) a steadfast, unwavering commitment to you, regardless of your performance.
Bible Study: Understanding "God is Love"
1. The Greek Word: Agapē (1 John 4:8, 16)
- Definition: Agapē is the highest form of love—a willful, conscious choice to love someone regardless of their worthiness or response.
- Context: Unlike Eros (romantic) or Philia (friendship) Agapē is sacrificial and unconditional.
- Meaning: When John says "God is Agapē" he is stating that all of God’s actions—creating, ruling, and judging—are rooted in this selfless, divine love.
2. The Hebrew Connection: Ahavah and Chesed (Deuteronomy 7:9, Psalm 136)
- Ahavah: Refers to the deep, intimate love God has for His people—a love that is eternal.
- Chesed: Often translated as "lovingkindness" "mercy" or "covenant loyalty".
- Context: In Deuteronomy 7:9, God is revealed as "faithful" (El Emunah), keeping His covenant of love for a thousand generations.
3. Cross-References: The Anatomy of Love
- Love is Action: "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)
- Love is Sacrificial: "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us." (1 John 3:16)
- Love is Secure: "...neither height nor depth... will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:39)
- Love is Active in Us: "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God." (1 John 4:7)
4. Reflection Questions
- How does knowing that God is love (rather than just has love) change how you view your struggles?
- In what area of your life do you need to rely more on God’s Chesed (covenant loyalty)?
- How can you demonstrate Agapē (sacrificial choice) to someone who is hard to love this week?
- Prayer: Lord, thank you that your love is not based on my performance, but on your character. Help me to rest in the truth that you are love and to reflect that sacrificial love to those around me. I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
