The Highest Wisdom – What is a fool?
Scripture: “"The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God.' They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good." Psalm 14:1 (ESV)
This April Fool’s Day, pivot from silly tricks to divine wisdom. While the world celebrates foolishness, the Bible calls us to fear the Lord—the true beginning of wisdom—and avoid the folly of ignoring God. Be a "fool for Christ" by trusting God’s plan of the cross over the world’s foolishness.
April Fool's Day is known for pranks and pretending. But in the Bible, a "fool" isn't someone who tells a joke; it is someone who lives as if God does not exist or as if His rules do not apply to them. It is easy to look at the world and feel smart, but true wisdom begins with recognizing our need for a Savior. In 1 Corinthians 1:25, Paul tells us that “the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom.” The ultimate "fools" in God's eyes are those who ignore His truth. Today, don't be a fool in your heart. Instead, align your heart with His, knowing that seeking Him is the only way to avoid the pitfalls of a "fools" life, which brings sorrow and folly.
Bible Study: The "Fool" vs. The "Wise"
Goal: Define biblical wisdom and contrast it with foolishness.
Focus Verse: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 1:7
1. What makes someone a "Fool"?
- They deny God's authority: “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” (Psalm 14:1).
- They repeat mistakes: “As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly.” (Proverbs 26:11).
- They act reckless and reckless: A fool doesn't take time to listen to wise counsel and makes decisions based on selfish desire.
2. What makes someone "Wise"?
- They fear the Lord: Wisdom is not intelligence; it is honoring God, avoiding evil, and following His word.
- They seek counsel: Wise people listen to advice and learn from mistakes, while fools spread silliness.
- They recognize the ultimate "Foolishness": The message of the Cross seems foolish to the world, but it is God's power.
3. Application: Being a "Fool for Christ"
- In 1 Corinthians 4:10, Paul says, "We are fools for Christ’s sake." This means taking actions that the world considers silly or uncool—like choosing integrity over profit, loving enemies, or focusing on eternity rather than temporary thrills.
- Reflection Question: What is one area of your life where you have acted like a "fool" by ignoring God’s counsel, and how can you turn that around today?
Prayer: Lord, give me the wisdom to follow You rather than the whims of this world. Let me be a fool for Your sake, rather than a fool in my own pride. I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
