A Devotion on Esther Chapter 2: Finding Favor and Purpose

As we read Esther chapter 2, we're introduced to a young woman who finds herself in a unique position. Esther, a Jewish orphan, is taken into the king's harem, where she undergoes a rigorous purification process. Despite the challenges and uncertainties she faces, Esther gains favor with the king's eunuch, Hegai, and later with King Ahasuerus himself.

Finding Favor

Esther's story reminds us that favor is not just about external beauty or charm; it's about being found worthy and pleasing to others. In Esther 2:15, we see that Esther gains favor with Hegai, who provides her with guidance and support. This favor ultimately leads to her being chosen as the king's new queen.

As we reflect on Esther's experience, we can apply the concept of favor to our own lives. Favor can come in many forms – a kind word from a friend, a new opportunity at work, or a chance encounter that leads to a meaningful relationship. When we seek God's guidance and wisdom, we can trust that He will give us favor in the right places.

Discovering Purpose

Esther's rise to queen position her for a greater purpose – saving the Jewish people from persecution. As we read her story, we see that God is working behind the scenes, positioning Esther for this moment.

In our own lives, we may not always see the bigger picture or understand our purpose. But like Esther, we can trust that God is working everything out for  good (Romans 8:28). As we seek His guidance and wisdom, we can discover our purpose and live a life that honors Him.

Reflection and Prayer

- What areas of your life are you seeking favor in? Pray for God's guidance and wisdom.

- How can you trust God's sovereignty and providence in your life, even when you don't understand the bigger picture?

- Take a moment to reflect on your own story. How has God been working in your life, positioning you for a greater purpose?

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the story of Esther, which reminds us of your sovereignty and providence. Help us trust in your plan and timing, and may we be vessels for your glory. Give us wisdom and guidance as we seek to discover our purpose and live a life that honors you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
