Devotion: The Unveiling of Jesus (John 1)
John Chapter 1 is more than a historical record; it's a profound declaration of Jesus' true identity and mission, beckoning us to encounter Him in a transformative way.
1. The Word Made Flesh (John 1:1-5; John 1:14)
John opens with the powerful statement: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God". This echoes Genesis 1:1, revealing Jesus' pre-existence and divine nature as God's powerful and provocative revelation. He's the very expression of God, the ultimate message spoken into existence.
Jesus is the Word, the Life, and the Light of men. This life offers hope and rescue, providing a quality of existence superior to anything imaginable. The light shines in the darkness, which cannot overcome it. Jesus, as the Light of the world, removes the darkness of sin and brings spiritual awakening.
The divine Word, Light, and Life became flesh and lived among people (John 1:14). God Himself came to live among people.
2. John's Humility and Testimony (John 1:6-8; John 1:15; John 1:19-34)
Before Jesus' ministry, God sent John the Baptist to prepare the way, as Isaiah foretold in Isaiah 40:3. John was a witness to the light, pointing others to the One who would come after him, who was far greater. John declared he was unworthy to untie Jesus' sandals.
John's testimony was crucial. He recognized Jesus as "the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!". This title refers to the Old Testament Passover lamb, representing Jesus' sacrificial death to atone for sin. He testified that he saw the Spirit descend like a dove and remain on Jesus, confirming Him as the Son of God, the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. Matthew 3:16-17; Mark 1:10; Luke 3:21-22.
3. Grace and Truth (John 1:16-18)
John highlights that while the Law was given through Moses in Exodus 19:1 - 20:21, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. Jesus embodies both grace and truth. He is truth wrapped in tender mercy.
4. Becoming Children of God (John 1:12-13)
To those who receive Jesus and believe in His name, He gives the right to become children of God. This spiritual birth comes through God's will, not human effort. People are adopted into God's family, receiving the spirit of adoption and becoming heirs with Christ. This is a shift in identity, offering a relational connection with God as a loving Father, providing security and eternal blessings.
5. The Calling of the First Disciples (John 1:35-51)
John the Baptist's witness led his disciples to Jesus. Andrew and another disciple followed Jesus after hearing John's proclamation, "Look, the Lamb of God!". Jesus invited them to "Come and see". This invitation led to a life-changing encounter and is extended today. People are called to "come and see" who Jesus is, to follow Him, and to introduce others to Him, as Andrew did for his brother Simon Peter.
Reflection
John Chapter 1 describes Jesus – the eternal Word, the Life and Light of humanity, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, and the One who grants the privilege of becoming children of God through faith.
Consider whether you have grasped who Jesus is according to John's introduction. Do you recognize Him as the one who offers both grace and truth? Have you received Him, believing in His name, and embraced your identity as a beloved child of God?
Let John's unveiling of Jesus inspire in you a deeper relationship with Jesus, to "come and see" more of His glory, and to share this truth with the world.
