"Walking worthy" Ephesians 4:1-3 “I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
The word worthy gives us the idea that we must “match up” or meet certain standards with our actions and our words. Our appearance and actions on the outside should match the convictions we hold on the inside. In order to “walk worthy” we must live up to that calling, we must live in such a way that we honor God. It doesn’t mean we must earn our position as a child of God. Instead Paul is telling believers to live in such a way that we prove through our action and words that we are God’s child, that we do belong to Him. We are to live in a way that it shows that we owe our life to Him and that through His gift to us that we have integrity and now we possess the fruit of the Spirit that lives within us. John 14:17; Galatians 5:22–23.
We want to present that our message, our position as a child of God matches the character of Jesus Christ. We live it as well as possess it. We have been called and it is a “Holy Calling” 2 Timothy 1:9. James explains that we should walk according to that calling and our lives should reflect good. “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?” James 2:14. James is telling us that if we do not walk worthy then our faith is a dead faith and that is no faith at all. Hebrews 11:6 tells us that we cannot please God without faith.
So what this means is simple, what we say we believe should match up to how we live. So let us ask ourselves if our actions match our words? Are we a Christian who professes it but doesn’t live it? Would someone who didn’t know us recognize that there is something different about us and immediately identify us as a believer in Jesus Christ? Or would our actions and words make them think we are a part of this sinful world? Many of our moms used to say “Practice what you preach” and she was right, that should be the goal we strive for each and every day.
