Bible study: The unconditional love of God

Opening prayer

"Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gift of your word. Open our hearts and minds to receive a deeper revelation of your love. Help us not just to know about your love, but to experience it fully so that our lives may reflect your truth. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen."

Scripture reading: 1 John 4:7–12

Key verses emphasizing that love comes from God, like faith in Jesus Christ love also is a product of the spirit. Since love comes from God, hence one who loves in the Christian sense of that term has been born of God 1 John 2:29; 1 John 3:9; 1 John 5:1-18 and he knows God. Love stems from fellowship with God and knowing Him 1 John 2:3-5. In verse 1 John 4:8 it says that “God is love”, not that God loves but He “IS” love meaning it is His very nature, it is who He is. The absence of love in a person is evidence that they do not know God. Since God is love, intimate acquaintance with Him will produce love. You cannot know God, and have it not produce love in you. Like light 1 John 1:5 love is intrinsic to the character and nature of God, and one who is intimately acquainted with God walks in His light 1 John 1:7. To know how God has demonstrated His love, one must only look at the fact that God sent His one and only Son into the world so that we might obtain eternal life, 1 John 4:10. God’s love in Christ is the model for the love that Christians should have toward one another. In His divine nature and essence God has never been seen by any living man 1 John 4:12. Yet in the experience of mutual love among believers, this invisible God actually lives in us, and His love is made complete in us. 1 John 4:13.

1. God is the source of love

• 1 John 4:7–8: This passage highlights that those who love are born of God and know Him, while those who do not love do not know God, as God is love.
• Discussion: How does understanding God as the source of love shape your view of what love truly is?

2. God's love is demonstrated through action

• 1 John 4:9–10: God demonstrated His love by sending His Son so we might have life through Him.
• Romans 5:8: This verse shows God's love in that Christ died for us while we were still sinners.
• Discussion: God's love is active and sacrificial. What does Jesus' sacrifice reveal about the depth of God's love, and how does it contrast with often conditional human love?

3. God's love is complete and secure

• Romans 8:38–39: Nothing in creation can separate us from God's love in Christ Jesus.
• Discussion: How does this promise impact your daily life, and how can this verse help you when you feel tempted to feel separated from His love?

4. The call to love others

• 1 John 4:11–12: Because God loved us, we should love one another. If we love each other, God lives in us, and His love is made complete in us.
• Discussion: Why is loving others a natural response to receiving God's love? How can you practically show God's love to someone who is challenging to love?

Devotion: A love that quiets the soul

Scripture: Zephaniah 3:17 speaks of the LORD God being in our midst as a mighty one who saves, rejoicing over us, quieting us by His love, and exulting over us with singing.

Reflection:
This verse highlights God's active, tender love that brings peace to an anxious heart. While we face worries, God's love serves as an anchor, calming anxieties and soothing restless souls with unwavering mercy. His love is based on His nature, not our actions. Resting in this truth allows His love to quiet your soul.

Closing prayer

"Lord, thank you for loving us with a love that is unconditional, sacrificial, and unwavering. Fill us with your Holy Spirit so that your love may overflow from our hearts and into the lives of those around us. Help us to be living testimonies of your incredible love, bringing glory to your name. We pray this in the wonderful, precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, Amen."
